Over the years, research has shown us that children who have well developed foundational skills ~ Phonological skills ~ go on to become our most successful readers and writers. These phonological skills can be presented through play and everyday activities from 2 yrs old and they dont involve using printed letters, it is all based on listening to and repeating language sounds and patterns. When adults understand exactly what these skills are, they can truely make an important impact on a child's future reading success, through being intentional about presenting and developing these skills (in play) to their young child.
Struggling to learn how to read can be related to a number of issues some simply from not having formed letter - sound connections correctly or from not having had enough effective practice in developing this knowledge and skill needed for automaticity. Start with my "ABC Quick Quiz" to discover what your child does know and what they maybe struggling with. Then use this information to support their spelling development, consider which of my courses would best suit to support their next learning steps. If your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia, then my Homeschool Curriculum will explicitly teach your child to read and write at their own pace and they can repeat any lesson they need to anytime. This programme works best when you work along side your child and then support their practice through the follow up games and activities provided.
The best place to start is your child's name - can they recognise it, read it and write it correctly? And importantly do they know their first and second name? Watch my "How to teach your child to write their name" Youtube video on my FREE resources page to learn how to teach this well. Next grab my FREE parent workshop "All About Reading" and printable resources to build your knowledge about the essential skills your child needs for successful reading. If you're looking for more ~ grab my "Quick Quiz" to assess what your child knows about letters and sounds. All these resources will give you the confidence to decide when to start teaching your child how to read. Next, start the ABC ~ Ready to Read kids course, where I do all the teaching for you and provide all the resources you need to teach your child to read and write for 12months+.
If your child is aged between 2yrs+ then please start with 'Early Reading Skills' which will teach you all about phonological skills, these are the foundation of 'pre-reading'. If your child is aged 4yrs+ then you can start with my FREE Parent Course ~ "All About Reading" to build your knowledge about the important skills of learning how to read and write well. Ensure your child can recognise, read and write their name correctly (in lowercase letters) and then consider my ABC ~ Ready to Read kids course that follows a scope and sequence of sounds, is fully guided by Kate and available on-demand to suit your family lifestyle.
If you are looking for resources that support you to independently teach your child to read, then please take a look at all my free resources and parent course starting with Early Years Reading Skills. It is really important that you take the time to build your knowledge and skills in the Science of Reading, teaching and learning through explicit teaching, feel confident with letters (phonics) and their correct sounds, have decodable reading material and have a teaching road map of the order you will follow ~ because learning how to read is NOT random, it must be taught well. When you enrol in my ABC ~ Ready to Read course, you are also given access to my exclusive membership community, where I can expertly guide you with teaching your child how to read, answer questions, attend extra LIVE lessons for kids and access enhanced resources.
“Kate has been absolutely instrumental in our son’s reading journey. Without her guidance, he simply wouldn’t be where he is today. Her approach is structured, informed, and incredibly knowledgeable, and she has a gift for keeping multiple boys engaged both in person and over Zoom.
Kate’s communication with us was always clear and open, and she offered flexibility when our plans sometimes needed to shift. Her professionalism, deep knowledge of structured literacy and the code combined with her structured yet nurturing approach, made all the difference in our son’s progress.
If your gut feel is that your child is struggling with reading, or if it’s not quite coming together, I highly recommend seeking Kate’s guidance and homeschool reading program when your child is learning to read and write. Thanks to her support over the past five terms, our son has made rapid progress, and there is no greater joy than seeing him curled up in bed, reading books on his own". Jessie (Parent)
"My son 'J' struggled with phonics and sounding out words after his first year at school but thanks to Kate's expertise and dedication, he's made remarkable progress. Kate not only identified 'J' challenges but also understood his learning style. After three terms of lessons with Kate 'J' has undergone a transformation in learning to read and write. He's not only overcome his struggles but has developed great confidence in his learning. Most importantly he's discovered a love for reading books, something we never thought possible in such a short time. Thank you Kate for everything you've done!"

"The kindergarten videos are really professional and we really love it Kate. 'D' always chooses to do your video lesson and then she likes to write lots after. 'D' has been learning with Kate for two terms now, focussing on the phonics of 26 letters. She can now spell words and write sentences and her Englsih has improved quickly. Kate's teaching methods are excellent and very suitable for young children. The online lessons are also convenient for reviewing at any time. I highly recommend her programme!"
